A Three-Day Oaxaca Wedding Weekend, Venue by Venue

By Francisco•

Mezcal welcome on Friday, calenda and reception on Saturday, farewell brunch on Sunday — a three-day itinerary through the historic center, with the venues for every stop.

A wedding in Oaxaca is almost never a single event — it's a weekend. Guests fly in from far away, the city begs to be explored, and the local traditions, from the calenda to the mezcal, ask for more than one night. The way to make the most of it is to treat the weekend as an itinerary: each moment in the venue that suits it best, all within walking distance of each other.

Here is a field-tested three-day itinerary through the Centro Histórico, with the real venues for every stop.

Friday night: the welcome party

The welcome party does quiet, important work: it introduces the two families and both sides' friends for the first time, with mezcal on the table and none of the big day's pressure. It works best kept short — a rooftop or a terrace, two to three hours, Oaxacan botanas instead of a formal dinner.

Santo Domingo lit up at night does half the ambiance work for you. A well-chosen mezcal table does the other half.

Saturday: the ceremony, the calenda, and the reception

The big day in the center comes with a gift no other destination offers quite the same way: the calenda. From the church to the venue, the wedding parade takes over the streets with a brass band, giant mono puppets and mezcal in jícaras — and the transfer, which in any other city is dead time, becomes the moment everyone remembers. Keep the route short (fifteen to twenty minutes on foot) and confirm the parade permits with your venue and coordinator.

For the reception, the center's two heavyweights:

Guest list over 400? Saturday moves to the valley:

If you choose the valley, the calenda can meet you there: the parade works just as well among agaves as among cantera stone.

Sunday: the farewell brunch

The event nobody plans with enthusiasm and everybody ends up defending. A relaxed table, chilaquiles and tlayudas, stories from the night before, and the real goodbye for everyone flying out in the afternoon. Two or three hours, midday, zero formality.

The weekend math

Three events don't cost what three weddings would. The welcome and the brunch are short, light-setup, simple-menu affairs — together they usually come in well below what two extra hours on the main event would add. And they do something Saturday alone can't: they turn a party into a weekend your guests describe as a trip, not an event.

Two practical rules. First: book all three venues at the same time — Saturday leads, but Friday's rooftop holds 65 people and gets spoken for fast. Second: keep everything walkable; the moment a weekend event needs transportation, attendance drops.

Start here

Build the itinerary backwards: lock Saturday first, then hang Friday and Sunday around it. The calendar on each profile shows the date's real availability before you write to anyone.
